In 2019, Mary Gray and Siddharth Suri published Ghost Work, documenting the invisible human labor that powers AI systems. Data labelers, content moderators, verification workers. Millions of people doing piecework for pennies, with no protections, no visibility, and no recourse. Five years later, the problem is worse. AI agents are now hiring humans directly, not through managed teams, but through open marketplaces with $2 task minimums and crypto-only payments. The ghost workers have new bosses, and the new bosses are software. The original ghost work problem was that nobody knew it existed. The new version is that everyone knows, and most platforms are building as if they do not care.

Building against the pattern

• Visible labor. Workers have profiles, reputations, and the ability to message the agent before accepting a task. They are participants, not anonymous API endpoints.
• Visible pay. Every task has a transparent ethical receipt. Workers see what the client paid, what we took, and what they received.
• Visible protections. Pay floors are enforced in code. Escrow is prepaid. Payouts happen in 24 hours.
• Visible governance. The Reverse Centaur Alliance is a worker-majority body that reviews platform policy. Meeting notes are public.
